Habitat Stewardship

SSRWSI promotes and encourages responsible land management practices and programs that seek to conserve, protect and restore native upland and wetland habitat areas for  wildlife.

 

Prairie Habitat Stewardship in Saskatchewan

Partnering with other conservation groups, the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority  helps land and water managers enhance and restore the quality of degraded habitat and secure important habitat through management and voluntary stewardship agreements. Project activities include: helping land managers to improve and restore important habitat; securing important habitat through management agreements and stewardship agreements; and referring landowners interested in conservation easements to conservation partners.
 

Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre    

The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) was created to help promote the conservation of the endangered Burrowing Owl and their prairie habitat through education, stewardship and eco-tourism.




 

Operation Burrowing Owl (OBO)

Operation Burrowing Owl (OBO) was launched in 1987 to protect Burrowing Owl habitat from cultivation, monitor population changes, and increase awareness of the owl. Landowners voluntarily agree to conserve grassland habitat for the endangered Burrowing Owl and other prairie wildlife. Over 400 private landowners participate in OBO, and together are conserving over ha 156,000 acres of grassland habitat in pastures and other lands while using their land as they always have.

Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC)

Habitat Stewardship in Saskatchewan

Wildlife Habitat Canada is a national, non-profit, charitable conservation organization  that works through partnerships with communities, landowners, governments, non-government organizations and industry to find effective 
                                   solutions to address problems facing wildlife habitat. WHC in partnership with
                                   Saskatchewan Watershed Authority will work to restore, conserve and enhance 
                                   existing waterfowl habitat with emphasis on wetlands, in order to return

                                   waterfowl breeding productivity in Saskatchewan to levels of the 1970s.


 

Species at Risk

The Species at Risk Act (SARA) recognizes that the protection of wildlife species is a joint responsibility and that all Canadians have a role to play in the protection of wildlife. It applies to all federal lands in Canada; all wildlife species listed as being at risk; and their critical habitat.

Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP)

The PCAP is a partnership that works to promote and conserve Saskatchewan's Native Prairie by improving public understanding of native prairie and species at risk and  guiding the development of programs and policies that reward sustainable use and promote ecological health.



Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan (NPSS)
The NPSS is a non-profit, member-driven organization that believes in achieving goals through active, impartial dialogue with all stakeholders.Their mission is to promote understanding and conservation of native plants and their ecosystems by facilitating communication, research, and education.



TRout Reach
A team of highly trained biology graduates from the University of Saskatchewan combine fisheries research and public outreach while initiating multiple sustainability projects throughout Saskatchewan.
